I had a young lady recently tell me she loves the way I dress and asked me where I buy my clothes. My answer was to look down at what I had on at the time and scrunch up my nose at her cuz I thought she was being sarcasticky.
I had on cargo pants, a tank top and sneakers. Work clothes. She was dressed to the nines in a super fitted dress and some bad azz heels.
Me: Da hell? It's just cargo pants and a tank top.
Her: Yeah...but I like the way the pants fit you...loose on your hips and the tank top is fitted but it's a different cut than I've seen. I like that belt you have on too. I would have never thought to wear a fancy belt with cargo pants and your bracelet seems like it would be weird with that outfit on anybody but you. How did you know to do that?
Me: (Taking another look at my clothes and then smiling a bit.) Oh...well...um...I got the cargo pants at Nordstroms. One of their brands. I always buy them a size larger so they hang loose and are long enough. The tank top I got at Target...it's one of those Champion ones with a shelf bra thingy. I like the look of a wife beater but I need structure in my life. The belt is from Target too. It's fabric and ties so my pants don't fall off. I buy every funky fabric belt I find. In fact...I bought three of this one because it is something I will wear for years. Leather belts hung low like this tend to lay weird in the back and hey...I have a lot of All Stars. I just pick a pair.
Her: And the bracelet?
Me: I like bracelets so I always look for different ones.
Her: I wish you had time to go shopping with me.
(SIP: Well I don't.)
Me: Maybe next time I'm in town.
I love my style. It's simple and pretty basic I think. I love cotton or pretty much anything I can throw in the wash and then in the dryer and be done with it.
The most fascinating thing to me is watching a group of women go into the same, exact store and choose an outfit. I love how they all come out with something different and uniquely them. That is soooooooo cool to me. I dont' like looking like everyone else and I pretty much don't follow a lot of the fashion rules except the big ones. The only thing I will say that I make sure to do is wear the proper undergarments cuz the kid ain't trying to have her business out there like that.
I might rock a cotton t-shirt with a fancy skirt and yeah...I'm well known to focus on comfort first and foremost than looking hot.
Seriously.
My style has always been described, by me, as "T-shirt and Pearls." I do note that I wear a lot of neutral colors and I know I like to emphasize my waist but for the most part...I'm pretty casual with a bit of bling tossed in for good measure. I wear sleeves when I'm in air conditioning and if I'm wearing something without sleeves...I always have a cardigan in my bag. Yup...T-Shirt and Pearls. LOL!
The most important thing about my style? I don't care if anyone else likes it or not and I am soooooo serious. Nobody's opinion on the way I do me is more important than mine and I hope you feel the SAME.DAMN.WAY.
What would you describe YOUR style as? Are you still developing your style or do you have a pretty good handle on it? What areas do YOU feel you need work on?
