I ADORE Thanksgiving, as you all should know by now, and take my prep and tablescaping something serious. This year I'm having a new challenge as we're traveling to the mountains for Thanksgiving and will be staying at a cabin.
A cabin I know nothing about.
I don't know what pots and pans it will have. How many big spoons, serving platters, etc. there will be. I don't even know how far away the nearest grocery store is going to be and hey...what if it snows?????????
The cabin isn't all that close to an airport so we're going to drive there. Yes. Us. Roadtrip.
WHEEEEEEEEEE or WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA?
We've never done a road trip together. We prefer flying. The farthest we've ever driven together was from here to The Inn at Perry Cabins which took about two hours.
And we're concerned. Well...I'M concerned.
10 hours. Driving.
Since we're driving...we're taking Jaru (Tears thinking about how much Lucy would have enjoyed it!) and I'm going to prep as much of our food as possible and have it frozen and ready to go. I've already made the gumbo and used my FoodSaver GameSaver Deluxe Vacuum Sealing Kit to package it for the freezer. I felt like a doofus using the thing since I've owned it since we got married (wedding present) but haven't ever really used it. It was SO.AWESOME to freeze the gumbo with. Nice, flat packages super neat. LOVE!
DUDE...WHY HAVEN'T I BEEN USING THIS THING? That pic isn't mine since my model is from 2005 but BAAAAAAAAAAAAABY! I've fallen in love with mine all over again! I even already had two brand new rolls of the stuff that makes the bags. GO ME! I coulda been standing in front of the fridge with the freezer door open smiling my super goofy smile looking at how nice and lovely and neat it's all organized with lovely flat frozen packages for years now! Shit! Next time I do it I might put on an apron! WITH RUFFLES AND SHIT! GO ME! GO ME! GO ME!
RANDOM FROM SIP: Why can't we ever find a Black retro housewife pic? Please excuse the random blackface brushup. Yall get the picture right?
I'll leave yall to ponder if it's okay for me to add random blackface all willy nilly like I'm an insensitive jerkwad without a concept of racial identity, sterotypes and whatnot.
So...I'm kinda wondering about the rest of the dishes I want to take with me. I've never frozen a Thanksgiving meal before and traveled with it. I was wondering if I should get the Creole Cornbread Dressing prepped right up until I bake it and freeze it then or...go ahead and bake it and THEN freeze it OR...just get all the ingredients chopped up and whatnot and do all of the work once there.
Also...my turkey. I plan on brining it in a cooler with ice on the drive so it will be ready to go once we arrive. I think. But wait...no...if I back out how long I brine it...that will be too many hours so yeah...I guess I just travel with it iced up and start the brine once we get there. Lemme read up on that some more.
Oh gosh...so many decisions!
My tablescape is going to be real simple this year. Burlap, white and green. Simple and as cute as I can make it with whatever the cabin has. I read that all of the dishes are white so I'm good there. I'll take some non-glass chargers to dress it up.
Do any of you travel with your food? Any tips?
Are you traveling for Thanksgiving this year? Flying or driving? If you're driving...how long of a drive do you have ahead of you? Do you break it up? Any roadtrip tips for novices?
