For the past year, once every couple of weeks or so, I have to listen to The Robinator cuss up a storm about how there is never anything on television and yet we pay a straight GRIP for all the channels of nothing.
Basically...it takes us about 30 minutes of channel surfing to even find something reasonably decent to watch and it's usually something on the Discovery Channel. Dude has really started to taking a liking to Survivor Man, Moonshiners and some show about being dropped off naked in the woods.
I've decided to not look too much into that in the even it means I'm going to have to leave him soon because he's thinking about being one of those crazy out back woods people.
So...while he's been TALKING about it...I've been BEING about it. I took a general assessment of what we actually watch and well...truth be told, I could get by just fine with my Netflix, HuluPlus (If you sign up for HuluPlus use this link so we can get two weeks free. LOL! http://hulu.com/r/qsHhSg #HustleMonnie) and Amazon Prime subscriptions.
The television we generally watch is in the family room and it's a smart TV so we have those apps there to use. The other televisions aren't smart TVs so I bought a Chromecast. Here is my review here: http://creoleindc.typepad.com/rantings_of_a_creole_prin/2013/11/no-title.html
But we were concerned about watching local television. I did some research and found out about this site:
If you click on it and put in your address (not just your zip code), it will tell you what channels you can get using a digital antenna. I found over 30 channels we could watch including the local channels. HOWEVER...one of them didn't work yet and it might be a deal breaker...but we'll get back to that later.
So I purchased this antenna: RCA ANT1650F/ANT1650R Flat Digital Amplified Indoor TV Antenna
It picks up the HD channels too.
So, we tried it when it arrived and The Robinator was WAY impressed with the quality of the broadcasts and how many were available. We discussed it...AT LENGTH AGAIN...and came to the conclusion that we'd be perfectly entertained without our VERY EXPENSIVE Verizon FiOS cable package. We pay $7.99 a month for HuluPlus and so is our Netflix. Our Amazon Prime is $79 per year and we can pay for whatever movies we want to watch at $2.99, $3.99, etc. if it's something not on our subscriptions yet.
I think it's a solid, solid plan once we get a Chromecast and an antenna for each television.
Have we pulled the trigger yet?
Baby steps for him. I don't want to shock his system. LOL!
But...I'm ready whenever he's ready.
Now...on to the potential deal-breaking glitch. It didn't pick up ABC and we don't know why. We're trying to figure that out but honestly...the antenna hasn't been hooked up to the television since I bought it so it might take a while. I can watch "Scandal" first thing the next morning on HuluPlus...but hell...I'd miss Kelly and Michael every.single.day.
And I LURVES me some Kelly and MIchael.
Are you considering cutting the cord too? How long have you been considering it? Over a year like us? LOL! What's holding you back?
