That green blouse was everything.
I'm really loving Gabby's performances.
SIP: I'm trying to unhinge my jaw that there are ONLY two dramas with Black women leads and both the women are KNOWINGLY sleeping with married men and both the shows are written by Black women.
If you haven't watched and plan on watching...don't read further.
I watched the show last night and enjoyed it for the most part. I hated the ending, of course, cuz...REALLY?
What I really felt was empathy for Mary Jane. Poor girl has a lot on her and she's OH.SO.LONELY. Like...lonely, lonely. The kind of lonely that has settled into desperation and acceptance of things you'd never accept all in the name of connecting with someone...anyone.
The show opens up with her girlfriend trying to off herself. We never get the back story to that but...seems like old girl is single too. Single, successful and OH.SO.LONELY.
Then we find out more about MJ's girl at work. She's about to be single even though she loves her husband and kids. Turns out...she chose work too much over them and, as these things generally play out, her family got tired of being in second place.
Then, her mother, who has been married forever, constantly points out how miserable she is.
Then...the super classy wife of the married man she's sleeping with shows up STUNTING ON THEM FOOLS in a hot white suit bares how shook she is by drilling MJ with a line of questions that should only be expected to be answered under oath with a judge presiding.
And well...the niece who says the only thing she's good at is sans ropas? *sigh*
Basically...the only woman in this show with some damn dignity is the maid who refused to clean up some nasty ish cuz well...that was just nasty.
DIGNITY. There's a word. DIGNITY.
So...here's where I REALLY felt poor Mary Jane's plight. She's back dating Mr. Never Answer. We don't know much about their back story yet other than he's not married and he's fine. Now...when married dude showed up and he went outside...I thought he handled that perfectly. Now...when he went back inside, however, we got a glimpse that ish wasn't solid between them. Those little white lies plant seeds of mistrust and when you don't trust someone...truth be told...you don't really think about them in terms of being someone whose feelings you should CHERISH. Now...granted...they were just in booty call mode but what COULD have happened had they been honest with each other in that moment?
"Who is that?"
"The dude I was dating when we were broken up. We're not dating anymore and he hasn't accepted that yet."
Simple. No need for lies. No need for game playing. BAM.TRUTH!
So then she goes to work and she has this super harrowing day. The kinda day that could make or break her career, of which is the only thing working in her life. The kinda day you want to share with someone you love.
Ring, Ring...HONEY GUESS WHAT????? I KICKED AZZ TODAY!!!!!!!!
DAMN BABY THAT'S AWESOME! GOOD JOB! I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT! LET'S CELEBRATE!
So she calls Mr. Never Answer.
Dude is on his way to pick up another woman to take to the concert since she couldn't go with him. He's very honest with MJ about what's going down. He didn't lie. He didn't omit a thing. I guess dude didn't do anything wrong.
Except we all know he did because we were hoping, along with Mary Jane, that they were working on something spectacular.
But we know they weren't because of that little lie and he straight up threw that ish in her face so quick about old boy trying to punch in the code and her lying about it. He'd already decided that she was playing games so hell...nothing spectacular is going to happen here...let me keep my options open and keep tagging that toned azz. WIN! WIN!
Something spectacular. How exactly does one get there when it seems everyone is setting up a checkmate move being selfish as hell and only thinking of yourself CONSTANTLY? WHEN DO PEOPLE START THINKING ABOUT THE OTHER PEOPLE'S FEELINGS AND LIVES AND WHATNOT? WHAT THE HELL DO THEY TALK ABOUT BEFORE AND AFTER SANS ROPAS??????????
So poor little MJ does what she can count on to make her FEEL. She goes to the gym so she can FEEL her body moving and getting stronger. Who is at the gym? Married jerkface. And he follows her into the WOMEN'S LOCKER ROOM and messes the entire show up for me just as I was starting to feel badly for the poor girl. Then I was all like...with a choice like this one...you get what the hell you get. You know good and well that man is MARRIED as in he is NOT SINGLE. And he has kids. #GirlBye Ain't no swerving in the world good enough for you to be so UNDIGNIFIED all up in public screwing a married man in the shower of the gym.
I know she's lonely.
I know she thinks she NEEDS someone.anyone.a man to complete her but child...you got to have some DIGNITY about yourself.
I love that the show is throwing in just how complicated and stressful juggling work can be. Instead of people rushing around TALKING about how the job has them stressing...they are showing it. And they're right. Work can kick your azz physically and emotionally and sometimes you just want to lay it all down and put your head on someone's shoulder while they rub your arm and kiss the top of your head while listening to you talk about it. That unconditional support you know? They take one look at your face and know it's been a ringer of a day and make that moment all about you.
I get it. That's IMPORTANT.
What do you do if you don't have it yet? You need a good circle of GOOD framily. People who would tag your azz about that married dude you're so hung up on. People who would be concerned as HELL that this man's wife showed up at your job. People who would shake the SHIT outta you for letting some man take naked pictures of you with his damn phone ESPECIALLY knowing good and well you make your good living in the public eye.
People who would remind you to have some damn DIGNITY.
Did you watch? What did YOU think? Let's talk about it!
