Well it's finally here. My anniversary and my mommy's birthday. A day that makes me smile softly in pain and rememberance one minute and then with complete joy the next.
I remember our wedding day fondly because it was exactly as we wanted it to be. Because of a few factors...we did it non-traditionally.
First...we wanted to get married on my mother's birthday and in 2005...that was on a Thursday. LOL! Not exactly a popular day to get married. Second...I'd always wanted to get married in Monterey, California and since Robby is a HUGE golfer...Pebble Beach became more than ideal for us. Because we love and respect our family and friends...we couldn't in good conscience invite folks under those circumstances since the rooms at The Inn at Spanish Bay cost more than a lil bit.
Even though we were getting married without guests...I still wanted to be a beautiful bride and I made sure I was princessed up for my big day. For the day I admitted to God that yes...He knew best and yes...I was humbled by the love He sent me.
Our wedding was at 2:00pm and the church was delightful and a block away from the ocean. The photographer was FABULOUS and we laughed and laughed and laughed with him.
Robby started crying first...and, even though I was worried about messing up my mascara where there were cameras around...lol...I started crying too. I always wondered why people cried at weddings because it's such a happy occassion. Now I know. The emotion behind bonding with someone you admire, respect and love...for LIFE...is just so overwhelming. So life altering.
When we returned home, the following weekend we hosted a wedding celebration for our family and friends. Our guests started arriving on Thursday and we enjoyed having a house full of people. On Friday night, most of our out of town guests came to our house for a light dinner. They'd arrived at their hotels to their welcome bags complete with maps of the city and Metro cards. It was no coincidence this event was taking place the weekend of the Cherry Blossom Festival as I wanted them to see DC at it's most beautiful. The weather that weekend was picture perfect.
On Saturday, as our guests enjoyed the Cherry Blossom Festival, I, my surrogate mom, and my oldest girlfriend from home, Lisa East, decorated Equinox Restaurant and I have to admit...everything was quite lovely. Our guests were treated to a formal dinner by Chef extraordinare, Todd Grey and were seranaded by a FABULOUS jazz trio.
We laughed and laughed and smiled and smiled surrounded by our loved ones.
On Sunday, a traditional Creole Wedding Brunch was served at our home and we can honestly say that as our family and friends were trickling out and heading to the airports...we were overwhelmed with spirit and how wonderful family makes you feel.
Life is good yall.
It's early morning and we're leaving in a few hours for an anniversary surprise. It's raining and gloomy but I can still see the sun shine. All I have to do is look into my guy's eyes and there is it...It's Spring.
I so ENJOY my husband. He's so perfect for me. Yup...even when he's eating all of the dang shortbread...there is none more perfect for me.
I thank God and the Universe for my husband. Life is so much more beautiful with him by my side.
If you don't already have it...I wish for you a love like mine...if you do...I pray you recognize it and treat it accordingly.
Love,
Monnie, Robby, Jaru & Lucy
