When we first heard about Lucy it broke our hearts. She'd been found tied to the gates of the Baltimore Zoo with a shattered back leg and a chain embedded in her neck. She was emaciated and very aggressive even though she was weak from lack of food. The poor baby had been there for 3 days before someone realized that she needed help.
She was taken to the doggie hospital and worked on and stayed there for several months while her leg healed...then...they looked for a home for her which was difficult because of the aggression part.
Well...we took a chance on her and brought her home with us. She was scared and nervous and shaking the entire time poor baby and she hurt me deeply thinking that someone could have done the awful, AWFUL things to her that were done.
Jaru was uber excited when he saw her and immediately went to greet her with a big goofy grin.
She jumped him.
Yall...it was bad cuz we'd never had such in our home before but we'd read that this is what happens when you introduce a new boxer into the home. They have to figure out who will be the head dog. We took them on the deck and stood there while they had it out. Even though it was obvious that Lucy was used to fighting, we weren't worried about Jaru because he was twice her size.
Lucy won. LOL! And her title as Queen Reign Supreme was duly noted by everyone.
So we brought them in and introduced her to the house. Jaru started bringing her toys to play with and she'd take it from him and put it in a corner. He was confused and would go get one to show her how to play with it and she'd jump him and take it back. LOL! He soon learned to stop bringing them to her. ROFL!
That entire evening was just about letting her do what she does. No sudden movements from anyone...it's all about our Lucy-girl.
When we fed her she ate her food so fast like she couldn't believe she was eating. I teared up. She got bathed and fluffed dry and then it was off to bed.
Initially we'd put her bed across the room from Jaru's because we didn't know how that would go. Jaru got in his bed and watched her as she paced the floor nervous with the door closed. She kept coming to the side of the bed so one of us could touch her. Finally she went and laid down.
With Jaru.
So we put her bed next to his and showed her it was hers. She paced nervously but then she got in it and we covered her with a blankie. Poor baby was plum tuckered out.
She woke several times during the night with whimpers and nightmares we're sure.
The next day I started my morning as I usually do and then...I freaked her out. I reached in the closet to get the corn broom that I use to sweep off the front steps. She saw it and BOLTED upstairs. I rushed after her and found her under the bed terrified. I didn't even thing about it. I got under the bed with her as did Jaru and we all just laid there under the bed until she felt better.
I'd brought the broom with me and it was on the floor. She sniffed it and walked around it. I picked it up and talked to her...let her know that it would never be used ON her.
Today, Lucy has been with us for three years. Since we don't know how old she is or when her birthday is, we always consider today her birthday. She's a completely different doggie from the one we met. She's sooooooooooo sweet and loving and loves just about EVERYONE but she does have her favorites of course. ROFL! There are certain friends we have that when they arrive she goes NUTS cuz she's soooooooooo excited and she just KNOWS they are there to see ONLY HER! LOL!
I'm so sorry it seems so many of you would never be able to visit 13700 because of your fears of doggies because, as you know, Lucy and Jaru will NEVER be "put up." We'll have to meet out for lunch. LOL!
Yup...today is all about the Princess. Our Diamond Sky Lucy AKA...DEBIL DOG! LOL!
I hope if you're thinking of getting a doggie you think about rescuing one. It's really, really worth it. They love you soooooooo much because they know you saved them and they are oh, so loyal and sweet!
