The salon I've been going to for a couple of years now is Dominican. I don't use any of the products they use other than their setting lotion nor am I comfy with them doing my touch-ups every time.
I usually wash my hair at home and then put my conditioner in...plastic cap it up and put a hat on. If I decide to go midday...I take my products with me because I know what products work best for MY hair.
Dominicans don't have hair like mine, for the most part, and what works for THEIR hair simply doesn't work for me.
The argument could be raised that because of this I would be better served going to a Black salon but to me...the Dominicans have something that will keep me loyal.
What's that you ask?
THEIR SIMPLE BUSINESS MODEL.
I can't stand sitting and waiting for an hour plus past my appointment time before someone touches my hair. I think it's dumb when a salon doesn't have at least double the amount of dryers as they do shampoo bowls. I don't like people asking me a million questions about my life and anything over 3 hours from start to finish just isn't worth my time which...in my opinion...is far more valuable than the hair stylist THINKS theirs is.
Dude...you do hair. Ain't nobody checking for you as if you were Queen of Everything. In short...I ain't kissing no stylist's azz.
Again...you do hair.
It seems the better the stylists were in my past...the bigger their egos, the longer the wait without explanation or apology and the more the damn prices increased every 6 months. I am NOT paying you $65 to roll my damn hair and bump the ends.
That said...the Dominican model is fluid. I get there...get rinsed (remember I get there washed and conditioning), get rolled, get under the dryer, get styled.
Get the hell outta there and back to my life. And I haven't met a nosy Dominican stylist yet. They don't care. Just hurry up so they can do the next head of hair.
Is this disloyal? To whom? My money? My time? My hair? No.
It's cheaper, quicker and hair looks just fine.
Go. Me.
When Black salons start focusing on the customer's overall satisfaction while recognizing that most of us with money we would spend weekly at the salon don't have all day to be messing with no damn salon...then I might go back. If only to keep more of the products I use at my own home.
What say you? Do YOU have any complaints with Black Salons?
