On Friday I left the house a little after 11:00 in order to run some errands. I turned onto the road that intersects with the main road and saw a woman HUMPING IT.
She had a lunch bag, a work bag, snow boots, a coat and an umbrella because it was snowing. She was on side of the road because the sidewalks on that road weren't clear of all the snow from Wednesday.
I rolled down the window and asked where she was going and she said Walmart.
Get in lady. I'm going that way.
I found out that, from where she lives...Walmart is a 4 mile walk. She had to be there by 1:00 pm because she worked there from 1:00 - 8:00pm. She left her house at around 10:30 in order to get there on time.
They only have one car and her husband works in DC. He would pick her up from work.
They'd been living in the area for about a year now and they moved here so that their kids could go to the better schools and get a good education.
We switched over to Spanish because I got tired of trying to figure out what she was saying.
She's going to school two nights a week so she can learn to speak English "more better" and she practices with her friends at work all the time.
She also told me that she loves living here because the people are so nice. She says nice ladies always stop and give her a ride along that big stretch of road leading to the main road and that she has only had to walk all the way to work a handful of times. She made me smile when she said she always sees her friends who gave her a ride at Walmart and she is so happy to see them.
According to her, with her life of walking to Walmart where she works 7 hours a day and probably doesn't even have fulltime employment, there are so many more good people in the world than there are bad people and she's so "have happy" because they have such a good, good "life in order to live better."
That woman brought me joy. When I see her in Walmart...I just might hug her.
And yall know I don't like people touching me.
