I ran into this on Facebook yesterday. Several pictures of Drake and his girlfriend on vacation. The title of the article was mean stating that love was blind and referring to the young lady as his "chubby lumpkins."
The subsequent article was mean. Like...REALLY.MEAN.
Then...while discussing the article, SingLikeSassy showed me this article:
What Kind of Guy Does a Girl Who Looks Like Lena Dunham ‘Deserve’?
And I read it and accidentally read a couple of pages of comments.
Then...I watched the episode they were talking about.
And then I got really, really sad for Hannah.
Now...you have to watch the show to understand how powerful this episode was. See...Hannah is annoying as fug. Like...she talks too much, she's always pushing shit. She's the kind of girl who keeps her foot in her mouth and her head up her butt. And she doesn't care. She's promiscuous and gross. Like...she sleeps with guys and doesn't shower. She has a knack of wearing the absolute WORST thing she could wear for her body type and you get the feeling it's all on purpose. She does it for attention. She knows if she was the quiet, mousy type...she'd be wallpaper. That fake plant in the corner collecting dust. And she's unapologetic in who she is.
It's easy to dislike her.
I was about to bail on the show because the episode prior to this pushed my gross out meter WAAAAAAAAAAAY to the right. I was like...um...NO. HELL NO. Who does that?
But then I read that article and I went to OnDemand to watch the episode.
So...this sexy, rich, doctor dude showed up where she works and she shows up at his house later to apologize for something. She walks into this gorgeous brownstown which is isolated in it's quiet elegance tucked into the noise and ugliness of the city. You see her walk around in awe that the place even exists so close to where she roams.
Then...she kisses him. Randomly and straight out the blue. She kisses this MARRIED (recently separated), gorgeous, rich, sexy doctor while wearing the most atrocious romper with a tie at the midriff you could ever imagine.
And then...he kisses her back.
They end up having sans ropas and she gets dressed back into that hideous romper without showering and he tells her she can stay. She asks him to beg her and he does. So she stays.
And he cooks.
And they have lots of sans ropas, she wears one of his expensive sweaters, they play naked ping pong and chill out on the sofa like a couple who can't get enough of each other.
Her cellphone is no where in sight. She hasn't told a single soul where she is for two days straight. It's as if she has checked out of her life and she wants it to be completely different for once.
When Hannah FINALLY takes a shower, it's this intricate steam shower which she makes too hot and she passes out. He "rescues" her by stepping into the steam of the shower encumbered visually until he sees her and removes her.
And the steam/fog is lifted.
In typical Hannah world...she starts with the diarrhea of the mouth and blurts out all of this REALLY deep ish to old boy when, in all honesty, he probably just wanted something really light to keep his mind off his failed marriage. You see his eyes glaze over as she's talking and you KNOW he's thinking...WHOA...WHAT THE HELL????? And poor Hannah...she sees it too.
What we see and hear point to the fact that Hannah...just like all of us...just wants to be happy. Thing is...she JUST realized it while there with him. The poor girl had convinced herself that it's just not possible for someone like her. For someone who LOOKS like her. And my heart hurt for her. Truly.
Married guy goes to work the next morning and leaves her in his perfect brownstone. She spends some time there and I found myself begging her to leave. I found myself really hoping she wouldn't be there when he returned home because I didn't want her to get hurt.
Further.
The episode ends with her leaving after making up the bed and taking out the trash, which, is what started it all in the first place. Trash. The arc is completed and she walks off down the street silently.
And we feel like we understand more about who and why Hannah is who she is and it hurts. At least it hurt me.
People can be mean and mean people hurt people. The authors of both those articles and many commenters made it seem as if Drake's girlfriend and Hannah shouldn't be happy or deserve love because they don't look like models when we all know even models don't look like models. It was all very upsetting to me.
*sigh*
I don't want Hannah to hurt any longer.
I'm rooting for her now.
TEAM HANNAH.
